„umwelt’s 12inch “… city” from 1999 was one of the most impressive 12inches i had at that time and i played the shit out of it. it was dark and very emotional, it was abstract but also driving at the same time. this was 1999 though, before discogs and before facebook and all the other platforms people have now to do research on artists they like and follow their work. at that time it was the record shop – and that was it. nobody knew this guy though, and i didn’t get my hands on any of the following releases, so in my world there was no follow-up to this record ever and i thought it would remain a one-off gem in my record box. until by some coincident i recently discovered he was still around and had actually released numerous releases in the meantime. i was very excited and contacted him straight away and ended up booking him for krake festival in the same year. undoubtedly his set was one of the best of the whole festival! he took the roof off the place with his mix of raw electro, industrial and rave and everybody was talking about it afterwards, saying it was the highlight of the festival! talking to him i learnt, that most of the tracks he played were his own, mostly unreleased. he produces without computers, all his tracks are single takes, there is no editing, no mixing afterwards, he only has a stereo track recording which is what it is. he owns a cutting machine which he uses to cut dubplates from his tracks, which he then plays out during his sets. this whole information about this very unique artistic approach just killed it for me, and since working with him was so nice as well, i asked him for a demo for killekill and its labels and was hoping for tracks i could make a great 12&#8243,, of. i got 14 tracks and after weeks of trying to pick the best, i finally realized i held one of the best electro albums ever in my hand – banging beats and the balls to go big and epic, subtle melodies, drama, funk – this album has got it all, and what’s most important, the music on it is the exact opposite of so much other music nowadays: it is emotional, it tells a story, it is easily recognizable and it is not interchangeable. it’s just umwelt.“ nico deuster

the jungle brothers’ 1988 debut, straight out the jungle, was important for many reasons. it was sloppy and goofy but had moments of real focus and social consciousness. it was a true “kitchen sink” record, that caught a rap fanbase enraptured by eric b. & rakim, public enemy and boogie down productions a bit off-guard. also of note, beyond the excellence of the album itself, the jungle brothers were the fulcrum for what would become the native tongues movement – they came first, de la soul and a tribe called quest followed, under their guidance.

the second release from producer eomac’s new dublin-based label eotrax comes from nomadic irish producer lair. this is an exciting step for the label, moving away from the dancefloor into more diverse, eclectic territory. lair is a producer far from the norm, especially for those releasing on an electronic music label. she classifies herself as a composer, producer, vocalist, artist, sound-healer and yoga teacher. with a diverse background that includes singing classical and traditional material shes expanded her artistic approach into a diverse web-like multi-disciplinarian approach in keeping with her nomadic life. currently she creates electronic music, contemporary classical music and healing music under a variety of alias including laura kilty and luminousounds (for healing music). she is also in the duo noeverything with eomac. in her words my lair music is how i see the world - this one and others channeled - expressed through layers of my vocals which i shape electronically. the music has elements of mysticism, sacred geometry, energy, sound with intention and just sounds i love formed to make music i love. i see music as i create it. i work with lots of layers - for me its like creating an aural representation of the image i see. these layers of sound can be found in her debut self-titled ep in the deep, ritualistic drones of invoke and meld on the a-side, and the more concise rhythmical patterns of searching in circles on the flip.

lostsoundbytes is a brussels based young and fresh producer. he is one of the owners of -vaste choses-, an atypical music label that has released several tapes. his previous release was a split record on -land of dance records-, named -from sci-fi to lo-fi-. on willi s adventure, he worked with machines and push all his gear beyond the limits. raw and weird chicago inspired acid tracks, distorted voices that could make a hole in any heart, slow and oppressive industrial tunnel. keep an eye on him because lostsoundbytes is a prolific and tireless musician , he could soon play near you... enjoy.

say you love me wasn’t “om” alec khaoli’s first solo recording but the 1985 ep solidified the bass player and songwriter’s standing as one of south africa’s most consistently innovative pop auteurs. he built a career on ubiquitous rock, pop and soul hits with groundbreaking bands like the beaters, harari and umoja. but khaoli’s seemingly endless fountain of music continued outside these ensembles, where he usually played bass and contributed songwriting and vocals.

3 teens kill 4 was born in the summer of 1980 in the east village of new york city. they took their name from a new york post headline. the group consisted of doug bressler, brian butterick, julie hair, jesse hultberg, david wojnarowicz. there was a conscious decision not to have a front person or lead singer. david made cassette tapes with voices and sounds that he held up close to a microphone, fast-forwarding and rewinding. julie tried different rhythms on a korg rhythm machine. brian played a casio drum machine and jesse was on bass. doug joined the group in time to make the debut album. he was a music lover who understood how to avoid covering over the band’s non-musicality. their debut 7-song mini-album “no motive” was recorded in fall 1982 and self-released in 1983.

j.a.k.a.m is japanese artist takashige miyawaki, a long standing producer commonly found on crosspoint records. on this release for the ever intriguing malka tuti label miyawaki draws on a thrilling spread of influences to make a truly soul-stirring track. at times the vocals lean towards a middle eastern lilt while the saxophone burns with the fire of the post punk era. with monolithic drum hits, yearning violin and plenty more besides, wabi sabi is a many-headed beast of a track. moscoman takes the original and simmers it down to a more focused but no less exotic tribal house workout.

pop makossa - the invasive dance beat of cameroon 1976–1984 the pop makossa adventure started in 2009, when analog africa founder samy ben redjeb first travelled to cameroon to make an initial assessment of the countrys musical situation. he returned with enough tracks for an explosive compilation highlighting the period when funk and disco sounds began to infiltrate the makossa style popular throughout cameroon.

never underestimate a quiet guy. soft spoken and well-mannered alexander pletnev moved 3 years ago from the russian city of st. petersburg to the lithuanian capital of vilnius. that has been more than enough time for him to make the city his own. a co-founder of a hip barber’s shop that also hosts an improvised vinyl second hand corner, not to mention a cozy little bar where he can be found serving a quirky selection of beers, alex soon embraced influences filtered through the local nightlife institution ‘opium club’. his production powerhouse pletnev explores darker territories and far-out music lands untouched by his bright and melodic creative alter ego - ponty mython. the st. bones ep follows his well received and strongly selling offerings on meda fury and bahnsteig23. the ep’s two tracks, of contrasting mood and tempo, are accompanied by two top drawer remixes from the japanese tailor of sound and taste ryota opp and on-the-rise fellow st. petersburg producer and selector, inga mauer.

next up on the docket for acid camp records is a record created by duo john tejada and justin maxwell. the pair came together to make acr iii with two things in mind: creating sounds that put a smile on their face while possessing as much character as possible. the opening track, -i ve got acid (on my brain)- is a mind-bending wavetable freakout, the likes of which tejada and maxwell have been striving to do for years. using a vintage ems vocoder to create an original vocal sample, this track is bright, playful, & vivacious. -the name rolls in- is layered in an acid playground of sounds. a rhythmic track with a potent 303 bass line, prominent percussion, and that infamous vocoder back at it to create a distinctly groovy track. -field notes-, is a composition of celestial arrangements that is completely beatless. carried through by tiers of sounds, filters, and noisier elements, this track lulls the listener into an alluring sonic dreamscape.

from ras_g: “the god spell beat tape just happened. i always make quick freestyle beats at work. i work at a “wrekastow” so i m always surrounded and listening to random records and after my bluntch breaks. i would come in make a few quick joints on my spaceprogram 303 and i just ran thru the gospel section that round and in 2 weeks i had. the gospel of the godspell.”

moniquea established herself as one of the foremost female artists in the modern funk scene with her 2014 mofunk records debut album yes no maybe. for her followup, she continues exploring and expanding upon the boogie/modern soul sound of her debut, and at the same time, ventures bravely into a new sound inspired by the new wave and synthpop sounds of the 80’s. thus, the album title: blackwavefunk.

there are many ways for a band or an artist to compile an album: some make it in a week and some let the process go on longer. the latter approach does often mean that that the record will not be better than had it been recorded and mixed within a short amount of time, rather the contrary. however, there are those albums that just could not be made within in a week or a month, those compilation of songs that needed the time to melt together to form an album. fontäns third album titled fontän, released on hoga nord rekords is that kind of an album. put the opening track mangsebung on, then stay with the record until the closer shadows rings out and you will go clear, sharp, and mildly messed up by the listening experience because this is an extremely well directed trip in mind-altering music! this album needed time to reach such heights.

dez williams returns to mechatronica with “forlorn figures in godforsaken places”, dropping a stormy dose of diverse electro and machine funk for the berlin based label.
speedy, relentless electro cuts “xen” and “carkrash” vikdim make up the a side, driven by haunting samples, rumbling basslines and eyes-down energy. hypnotic roller, “on the verge”, opens the flip with dazzling keys and forceful drum programming, before “tromb” rounds off the ep in murky fashion through a robotic, hazed electro chant.

since summer 2016, ‘keep on’ has been doing the rounds in the house music community, with support from some of the biggest names on the circuit playing the track on a week-by-week basis. initially made off the cuff as a tribute to chicago’s ghetto house sound and inspired by the dc10 terrace, the track went onto become something of a monster that the young scottish producer never anticipated. after 6 months after constant requests the track will finally be publicly available. upfront high and energy drums combine with brash vocal samples to make the track a dance floor weapon for a peak time dancefloor. on the flip ‘antonio’s keys’ takes things deeper, the track works percussion into more thumping 4x4 kick drums whilst the hypnotic lead line pushes the track forward into the early hours of the morning. limited to 300 hand stamped copie

elizabeth merrick-jefferson is one of those artists who seem low-key. theres not a lot of information about her, if any, except for the existence of the first two records and a lone interview. one released in 2013 and the other in 2014. listening to either record tells you her music might be a lot of things, but low-key isnt one of them. powerful and colourful, direct, and with 313 references embedded in its dna, she pulls it off with style. elizabeths third record is no exception. it has found its home on our mothership label, burek. three happiness is tailor-made for the dance floor. it wont leave anyone with a pulse standing. playful synths, wonderful strings, and infectious groove make it impossible to ignore. knowledge revolution is layered and paced, painting a somewhat different picture. melancholy and a sense of mystery envelop this track, whose leitmotif vocal appears just frequently enough to provide insight into the title. the last track of this ep is fittingly titled noctilucent clouds. its a drumless track with a rhythmic main synth counterpointed by sounds which give off the impression of clouds shining through the darkness of winter nights. another amazing release from burek.

suction records is thrilled and honoured to announce the reissue of d arcangelo s self-titled debut ep for rephlex, the legendary uk label run by aphex twin and grant wilson-claridge from 1991-2013. d arcangelo are the italian duo of brothers fabrizio and marco d arcangelo, active in the underground electronic scene under various aliases since the early 90s, and still going strong today. released in 1996, their rephlex debut -d arcangelo- was one of the first releases to make a firm connection between contemporary idm/electronix and the sound of 80s synth pop. the 3 tracks on side a are ripping, industrial-strength electronix, as fierce, crunchy and menacing anything aphex twin himself had released at the time. in sharp contrast, side b s 3 tracks are playful, clean and melodic instrumental synthpop, with clear synthetic references to bands like depeche mode and omd. it was a sound that was certainly not in fashion at the time, and helped the ep stand out in 1996, for that very reason.
